Drove over to the local VW dealer to drive the GTI on my brother's behalf.

Such a well put together vehicle, but the differences in trim create levels of disappointment. In the S model I drove, I felt like I was in a cheap car, unlike the Autobahn in the showroom. Though I love the novelty of the plaid seats, they felt a bit scratchy, compared to the suppleness of the leather. The design of the center stalk is driver-oriented, a personally satisfying feature, but really closes off the openness of the cabin, especially with the dark interior palette.

On the performance front, it's fun to drive and I understand why these hot hatches are a big hit in the enthusiast market. Transitioning from a V8 to the four-banger is a drastic change that left me less than enthused by its power, especially climbing to speed on the freeway. However, the driving dynamics of the GTI were a reflection of a vehicle with six generations under its belt. The clutch complimented spirited driving and its pedal placement was superb. The throws of the six speed gearbox were surprisingly long, but made cruising drama-free. The car felt well-seated even while flogging it under an overpass. Refinement over imperfections in the road were most impressive, especially at this price point.

The 2015 GTI is an impressive little car and would be a front-runner if an economical, fun commuter car is demanded. I have yet to drive its competitors, but I'm officially a fan of the hot-hatch segment.

I agree but then again I am currently looking for a VR6 jetta in my budget so I am a little biased.

This is relevant to my interests. I'm going to have to be patient for the finances to make sense, but this will be mine!
